Why Choose Us
Paint Refinishing of Plastics and Metal Components
The secret to every quality painting project begins with surface preparation. The object to be painted must be free from any oils, grease, labels, dirt, rust, or residue. Also the surface must be smooth or of desired condition for acceptable finish results. APP takes this into consideration before starting any work. All items are cleaned, degreased using anti-static cleaners, and in some cases light feather fill or sanding is required for optimum results. Preparation is variable and depends on the item being painted and the outcome desired, so a variety of methods are utilized to provide the finish desired by the customer. APP employs green products and methods for cleaning and painting. To achieve this APP uses cleaning products certified by Green Seal or Eco Logo whenever possible. Also, all painting is applied in an approved Paint Booth with Paint Arrestors and Filters to be green to protect the environment we live in. Additionally, paint products are handled and applied in a controlled environment in accordance to (MSDS) Manufacturer Safety Data Sheets maintained by APP.
Paints Applied
All Products Painting specializes in the application of wet coatings. As implied by the name, “wet coatings” are any type of paint which is either brushed or sprayed onto a surface in semi fluid or aerated form and dry’s to a hard finish. This being said, “wet finishes” range from oil based to latex paints used around the home. The type of paints APP has the most experience with includes two part solvent based coatings which fall into the categories of Single Stage and Base Coats finishes. Single Stage is the color, gloss and additives into a single coat which is sprayed onto an object for desired results. Two Stage Paint is what is known as Base Coat / Clear Coat finishes. The base coat may be thinned in some cases but goes onto the object as a flat color. In some cases the base color includes metal flake or sparkle. The final coat is Clear Coat which goes over the base color and provides the deep luster and shine. The automotive industry almost always uses this method although it works well on many other objects as well. Solvent coatings utilize multi parts including the paint, reducer, and hardener. Since these are chemicals they must be sprayed in a controlled environment by experienced personnel.
Handled and applied properly the benefits of wet coatings are numerous. First of all, the amount of preparation required to clean and smooth out the surface is minimal. It is not necessary to remove the previous coat of paint unless it’s chipping or lifting. In many cases the old paint once lightly sanded and prepared provides a great sealer and base for the new paint. In comparison to powder coating, previous paint must be “burned off” to bare metal in a special oven at 1,000 degrees plus. This intense heat can result in damage or warping of an item and is not advised for all objects or materials. Of course plastics in no way can be placed into the “burn off” oven as they would be incinerated! Unlike powder coating, with wet solvent based coating applications, the old finish can remain and act to further protect and enhance for the final paint results. Also powder coating although resilient is prone to chipping as can be noted by your bicycles in the garage. Properly applied and thoroughly dry solvent coatings are very durable and resistant to scratching due to their bonding agents to materials on which they are sprayed.
